In Jersey the goods and services tax (GST) was introduced on May 9, 2008.
GST exemptions and zero-rated supplies in Jersey
Most goods and services supplied in Jersey are subject to the standard 5% GST rate. However, some supplies are either exempt from GST or taxed at 0%.
Examples of GST-exempt supplies include:
- Financial services
- Insurance
- Postal services
- Certain medical and paramedical supplies
- Supplies made by charities
- Registered childcare
- School fees
- Certain burial and cremation services
Zero-rated supplies are taxable at 0%. Examples include exports of goods, housing and qualifying international services.
Exempt and zero-rated supplies are treated differently for GST purposes, particularly when registering for GST and reclaiming tax paid on business expenses. Check the Government of Jersey GST guidance for the current rules.
GST registration in Jersey
Businesses established in Jersey must generally register for GST if the value of their taxable supplies reaches or is expected to reach £300,000 in any 12-month period. Taxable supplies include both standard-rated and zero-rated goods and services.
Businesses below the threshold may apply for voluntary registration. A business that makes only zero-rated supplies may be able to apply for exemption from registration, while a business that makes only exempt supplies does not normally need to register.
Overseas retailers and online marketplaces selling goods to consumers in Jersey must also register if their qualifying sales exceed or are expected to exceed £300,000 per year. This rule applies to goods dispatched to Jersey from overseas and does not apply in the same way to digital services.

£150 * 0.05 = £7.50 GST amount
- To get GST inclusive amount multiply GST exclusive value by 1.05
£40 is GST exclusive value
£40 * 1.05 = £42.00 GST inclusive amount
- To get GST part of GST inclusive amount you need to divide GST inclusive amount by 105 and multiply by 5
£42 is GST inclusive value

- To get GST exclusive amount while knowing GST inclusive value you need to multiply GST inclusive price by 100 and then divide the result by 105
£63 is GST inclusive value
